XO Laptop Review
I got my XO laptop from laptopgiving.org today. I plugged it in and waited the whole day, but I think it was already charged. There’s no way to tell if it’s done charging or not (I think).
It’s interesting. The keyboard is exceedingly small, and the keys are like those flexible keyboards. But I guess it wasn’t meant to teach typing skills. Also it has a touchpad mouse with two mouse buttons: X and O (of course). It has 3 USB ports, a headphone jack, a microphone jack, a rotating screen, built-in speakers, a built-in microphone, and what appears to be a built-in camera.

I managed to surf the net with it a little bit and investigate:
- Memory is just under 256 MB
- 1 GB disk space
- Fedora release 7 (Moonshine)
- processor Geode AMD 430 MHz w/ 128K cache
The final word on this review: this laptop is great for kids.
Updates
I’ve been getting questions about it, so I’ll answer them as they come in.
- Is the display black and white? It does support color, but it seems to have a lot of black/white/gray as a base color.

Sounds a little crappy. I wonder how useful it will be to the African children.

I dont know how this would be crappy or even close to it. The system was designed with the specific purpose in mind. It was never intended to be power box. I have seen videos of i, doing what its supposed to do, and it seems good enough. People have put their heart and soul into this, calling this crappy is just showing disrespect.

Just because people “tried” really hard, does that mean one can’t criticize it. It may be fine for donations, but to sell them in the U.S. may create a lot of unhappy customers here.

I’ve had more than one friend say that it was stupid for me to “buy” an obviously underpowered laptop, but the point was never to buy it for my own use. It’s a nice token of this neat endeavor to help children by providing them with some technology that may help widen their minds and better their view of the world. Remember, I didn’t just buy this–a child has its twin.

Regarding “Is the display black and white?”:
It’s color, but if you bring the brightness all the way down the backlight goes away and works in black and white only. Pretty nifty for outdoor use. Check out the specs.
