Website Tools

This is a list of “best tools to use” I’ve come across when trying to improve site traffic on some of the sites I run. Search engine optimization is really about how you can optimize your website to get more content relevant hits on your site–something that benefits you, the visitor, and the search engine.

With that in mind, the best way to improve traffic overall is to improve your site. This means having original and valuable content that’s easy to navigate. Remember: a good website is better than a clever one.

Yahoo!’s Site Explorer
This is becoming my most used tool. It lets you do things like see which pages link to you. It’s different from Google because Yahoo! indexes pages faster, and also shows you every page that links to you, not just the ones that have a certain page rank. It’s important to keep an eye on links to you mostly because it gives you a good idea of what kind of popularity you should expect from your site, and allows you to investigate how you’ve been attracting others.

Keyword Selector Tool
This tool tells you the popularity of a given search, and then includes other common searches containing your terms. It’s very useful when you want to know what kind of content is popular with your audience. Since the overture keyword tool has been down, I’ve been looking at this alternative. I haven’t had a chance to test it extensively yet.

More to come…
